Saturday, December 10, 2016 Randy Pease CD Release Concert

randy-pease-promo-1000pxPlease join us as we welcome our friend and New Harmony, Indiana based songwriter Randy Pease at his Evansville CD Release party for “Old Dog … New Tricks”. This is Randy’s fourth studio release of original songs, following 1997’s “Call Me Ishmael”, 2002’s “Sometimes the Moon” and his 2010 release, “Prodigal Sunshine”.

This is a rare opportunity, because while Randy can be heard locally with Harmony Road and The Flatheads, he seldom performs solo with a focus on his original material. It’s also an unusual house concert for us because we usually don’t host local performers (our focus is on bringing artists from outside the area), but Randy is not only a fine songwriter whose songs have achieved critical acclaim, but a good friend whom we think deserves wider exposure. This is a rare opportunity to hear many of Randy’s original songs, performed live, in an intimate setting.

A writer by trade and guitar slinger by vocation, Randy started his career as a performing songwriter in Stillwater, Oklahoma during the formative years of the “Red Dirt” sound, a blend of folk, blues and rock that is celebrated in the documentary, North of Austin/West of Nashville: Red Dirt Music. Randy’s music has received critical and popular acclaim, with “The Ballad of Rosalee” holding the #1 slot on the Texas Music chart in 2011, and his song “I Love This Game” performed by Monica Taylor on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion”.

This will be the second time Randy has performed on the Cabin stage, having released his 2nd CD with us in 2002 to a packed house and sold-out show. We’re looking forward to this show, and just as a warning, you might see Tim’s mandolin come out a couple times since Randy’s been a musical partner of his over the past 16 years. You can learn more about Randy on his website.

Seat reservations are $15 and the doors open at 7pm, with the music starting at 8pm. You will also be able to purchase Randy’s new CD at a very special price that will only be available to attendees on the night of the show. We’ll put out some wine and lemonade along with a few treats, and you are welcome to bring something to share or just for yourself. We enjoy making these events very special, and the camaraderie during the evening makes it even more so. Please come join us for this very special show!

Sunday, September 18, 2016 – Yann Falquet and Pascal Gemme

Our very special friends from Quebec, Yann Falquet and Pascal Gemme are going to a very special private concert here at the cabin.

Screen Shot 2016-08-31 at 1.28.39 AM

Yann and Pascal are 2/3rds of the world-touring Quebecois trio Genticorum. Tiffany and I first discovered the group at the National Folk Festival in 2011, and in 2016 we had the great pleasure to study music with Yann and Pascal at the New Harmony Music Festival and School. While we’ve been very busy with our various pursuits, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to host Yann and Pascal. You will be blown away by their talent, personality, and passion for entertaing.

Yann and Pascal are both master entertainers, and this format provides plenty of space for their musical personalities to shine. Pascal’s fiddling, Yann’s guitar accompaniment, and the duo’s vast repertoire of traditional songs and tunes are all presented with elegance and effortless musicianship.

Yann Falquet is a very active and creative acoustic guitar player on the Québécois music scene. His involvement in the province’s traditional music scene has brought Yann to perform on numerous recordings, and to tour regularly throughout Canada, the U.S., Europe and Australia with his main project Genticorum. He also toured for three years with the award winning Celtic and world group The McDades.

Pascal Gemme is a leading light in Quebec’s traditional music scene. Known as much for his original compositions as his fine interpretation of traditional tunes, Pascal is the fiddler, singer and arranger of the band, Genticorum, whose CDs have met with critical acclaim in several countries. Pascal has developed a vast knowledge and is a leading exponent of Quebecois music.

Because this is a Sunday show, we’re starting an hour earlier. Doors will open at 6PM and the concert will begin at 7PM. We’ll have some snacks and beverages out on the table, and you are welcome to bring something to share, or just to enjoy yourself. As with all of our shows, you must reserve your seats in advance. Seats are $15 and the funds go directly to the artist. Remember that we only have 25 seats available, so please reserve yours early. Most shows do sell out. Reserve your seats here.

Friday, August 7, 2015: Kevin Welch

With great pleasure we are bringing to our audience Texas-based songwriter Kevin Welch. Kevin is a masterful guitar player and a songwriter’s songwriter. Kevin has a global following and has played major festivals and events across the USA and around the world. Even if you haven’t heard his name before, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve heard his songs, recorded and sung by a long list of country and Americana artists.

Kevin Welch’s poetic lyrics evoke stories, that reveal the human character in a pure light. They are a joy to listen to. His long recording career, launched in 1990 with 2 recordings on Warner Brothers and several more on his own label, includes chart-topping collaborations with Kieran Kane and Fats Kaplin. When he’s not touring with Kane Welch Kaplin, he tours nationally, playing solo gigs or performing with his son, Dustin Welch.

Kevin moved to Nashville in the late 1970s, upon the suggestion of his friend John Hadley, a professor at the University of Oklahoma. Once in Nashville, he became a songwriter for Tree International. His songs were recorded by such artists as Moe Bandy, Waylon Jennings, Roger Miller, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, The Highwaymen, The Judds, The Kendalls, Patty Loveless, Reba McEntire, Charlie Pride, Ricky Skaggs, Pam Tillis, Randy Travis, Conway Twitty, Don Williams, and Trisha Yearwood.

Please join us for this very special Friday Night show, welcoming Kevin Welch to Evansville’s most intimate performance space.

Friday, June 12, 2015: Mark Dvorak

Mark Dvorak Concert at the Cabin

We are thrilled to present Mark Dvorak for his first time performing in Evansville! Some of the best shows we have had here at the cabin featured performers who are deeply influenced by the traditions of American music. People like Dana Robinson, Alan Jabbour and Ken Perlman, Orrin Star, and bands like Jubal’s Kin all had that certain sound that comes from studying American roots music. Mark is among these colleagues, as a performer and as an award-winning author on the life and music of Huddy Ledbetter, also known as “Lead Belly”.

Mark is a veteran songwriter, performer, and instrumentalist playing finger style guitar and clawhammer banjo. His concerts are a mix of the familiar and the new, traditional folk and standards from the American songbook. He plays authentic country blues guitar and picks great old-time banjo. Mark is a very engaging performer, and the intimate setting of a house concert is truly the best way to experience this great performer.

Mark Dvorak is a modern day troubadour who has been active on stage and in studios for more than 30 years. He was honored with the Woodstock Folk Festival Lifetime Achievement Award and the Lantern Bearer Award from Folk Alliance International. When Mark is not on the road, he is a faculty member at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. He has been called “a folk singer’s folk singer” with an “encyclopedic knowledge of traditional songs.”

Mark Dvorak is on of the great exponents of American folk music. He approaches it with respect, honor and cares about the people he’s singing to. He is genuine and not a caricature of a ‘folk star.’ – Frank Hamilton, Decatur Georgia

“One of a vanishing breed. Although all of us benefit from the tradition, Dvorak is one of the few who keep it alive”! – Utah Phillips

Please join us for this very special show, welcoming Mark Dvorak to Evansville’s most intimate performance space.

The doors will open at 7pm and the performance begins at 8pm. We’ll have some snacks out on the table, our lemonade, and a bit of wine and you’re also welcome to bring something to share.
